Tumay Gunaydin’s paintings have been developed from a series of portraits. Dark, eroded, and brooding while carrying the potential of hope, the characters in the paintings emerge from a certain past to look at the viewer through the mists of time. The mysterious figures question individuals and the world that they currently live in before receding back into a timeless haze. Through the questioning glances of her characters, Günaydýn compels the viewers to be more reflective and aware. With the layers of ink and the use of other media, the images gain more depth and evoke the idea of a past that is hidden behind various textures. The compositions allow for moments of light to breathe through, and a subtle calmness to reach out.

Special thanks to Mr. Andrew Hamilton, Cengiz Yakut and Zishan Uðurlu of The Marmara Manhattan.
