Irene Ravelli has not only inherited her father’s financial empire but also his business acumen. No unscrupulous methods are beneath her in order to attain her goals. However, Irene’s tough exterior begins to crack when two of her friends commit suicide after she buys out their company at very unfavorable terms for them. She tries to make amends by helping their eighteen-year-old daughter Francesca. The girl not only refuses but also publicly accuses her of being responsible for her parents’ deaths. Wounded, Irene retreats to Rome, devoting herself to restoring the palatial family residence. Her return to her childhood home, the memories of her mother that she had completely erased from her conscious mind, and her attachment to the street smart little girl Benny, force her to confront her innermost self and, for the first time in her life, Irene starts noticing the emotions of those around her. When her life is marked by another tragedy, the feelings of guilt that she had long suppressed explode like a volcano, forcing her to begin a new life.
