Zügürt Aga (The Agha) begins in an arid, far away village of southeastern Turkey and ends in Istanbul. The film tells the story of an agha (rural landlord) who fails to adopt to the socioeconomic changes because of his conservatism and romanticism. While his friends take advantage of the change and take their places in the new system, the Agha remains wallowing in the past. The Agha’s hopes don’t come true as the collective prayer for rain during the draught remains unanswered, and the political party he has supported doesn’t win the general elections. When he finally attempts to change, it’s too late. He is faced with a dilemma when the village folk immigrate to Istanbul: The Agha can no longer practice his authority and position. He has no choice but to follow them to the big city. Faced with the new values of the emerging economic and social order, he is now destined for failure and retreat.
