Erden Kiral
Erden Kiral was born in Gölcük in 1942. He graduated
from the Ceramics Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul.
In addition to working with Yilmaz Güney, early in his career Kiral served
as an assistant to directors Osman Seden and Bilge Olgaç. By 1978 he had
directed his own feature film, Kanal (The Canal). In
1983, Kiral moved to Berlin where he became a member of the Berlin Academy
of Fine Arts and The Association of German Film and Television Directors.
Kiral has gained international recognition and respect in his field for
his ability to convey universal human sentiments through individual stories.
His success has been marked by a number of awards including First Prize
at the 1981 Strasbourg Film Festival and the Best Director Award in Antalya
Golden Orange Film Festival for Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde
(On Fertile Lands). His 1983 film Hakkari'de Bir Mevsim
(A Season in Hakkari) received the Silver Bear Award in Berlin
International Film Festival, the FIPRESCI (The International Federation
of Film Critics) Award for Best Film, and the Best Film Award in the 2nd
Mediterranean Culture Festival. He presently lives in Germany and Turkey,
writing and directing films in both countries. |
