Rapture
is a dark comedy about the sometimes-confusing search for spirituality. A group of East Villagers are so wrapped up in their spiritual progress that they can barely see what's happening under their noses. Freddie, a graffiti artist and "visual designer" for Surplus Records; Tommy, his business partner; Habib, an Iranian residing in NYC and the designer of their latest talked-about party; Alvin, an old friend who is currently employed by Mr. Softee; and Sabena, Freddie's yoga entrepreneur girlfriend are all planning to go to a much-hyped silent rave. Kept waiting by their drug dealer, they receive a surprise visit from Freddie's ex-girlfriend, Anna, who is seeking shelter from a group of religious fanatics marching through Tompkins Square Park. "The Assembly of God", as they are known, are convinced all the latest global events and especially the recent stock market crash signify the end of the world. Since they believe God will spare his true disciples, they prepare themselves to be "raptured" into heaven, while trying to take as many people with them as the instant confession booth will hold.

All this is very easy for them to laugh at. But what happens when Markie the dealer finally shows up, converted? Are the lost souls on the brink of salvation, or is it just another New York moment?

Rapture was first produced for the 2001 NYC Fringe Festival, playing at Theatre for the New City and selling out all evening performances. It was also commissioned by HERE Arts Center as part of their supported artists program in July 2002.
