Almost immediately after moving to New York, Ali
Perret founded the Free ‘ Key Trio at the beginning of 2004
with two well-known musicians in the New York jazz scene, Ira
Coleman and Thurman
Barker. Instead of the traditional soloist-rhythm section approach,
the Trio treats the stage as an egalitarian platform in which all musicians
contribute equally and freely. During this libertarian attempt, the general
framework of the music is outlined by the compositions of Perret, which
are specifically written for the trio format.
