The mission to broaden the audience for Anatolian rhythms and folk music is what unites Turquartet and the Özer Percussion Duo in this special New York City performance. The ensemble, which is comprised of a string quartet and percussion section, will present arrangements from a wide spectrum of folk songs from various regions of Turkey. What separates the ensemble from the profusion of “ethnic” Anatolian bands is their insistence on pushing the boundaries of the typical Anatolian ethno-concert. The ensemble’s interpretation of celebrated Turkish composer Ulvi Cemal Erkin’s (1906-1983) Köçekçeler, arranged by Soner Özer, has garnered rave reviews from audiences in Turkey. In addition to Köçekçeler, the ensemble will present a repertoire of Anatolian folk songs and a darbuka (kettledrum) show.
