Sinan and Mahmut meet during a therapy session for a fatal illness and befriend one another. Sinan, an architect, feels responsible for the death of his son. Mahmut, a gambling racketeer, suffers from guilt for a sin he committed in his youth and is contemplating suicide. When Sinan learns that Mahmut has been murdered on an island, he goes to investigate and encounters a woman whose photograph he has seen and a man who resembles his dead son. Sinan feels like he has been miraculously presented with a chance for a new existence, but he is walking a thin line between life and death. Festivals and Awards 2003 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (Turkey): Best Film, Best Director,
Best Script, Best
Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Upcoming Actor (İsmail Hacıoğlu),
Public Jury Award From Atilla Dorsay Journey to the Secrets of the Past Ömer Kavur is back! The sixty-year-old director, who has given the Turkish
cinema numerous distinguished films, had been going through a dry spell.
But now, having been inspired by Macit Koper's masterly screenplay, he
is back with a story that involves a Kavuresque mystery, the settling
of accounts with the past, and a journey into the remoteness of the human
soul. This story of guilt, remorse and pay-off, which embarks on a journey
into the depths of the human soul in a somewhat European style, suits
Kavur. With Karşılaşma (The Encounter) -and a story close to his
heart - Kavur approaches the high quality of his past successes. The film
also contains outstanding performances. Without Uğur Polat and Çetin Tekindor,
two great actors, the captivating character portrayed by co-star Aytaç
Arman, the impenetrable beauty of Lale Mansur, and most important of all,
İsmail Hacıoğlu's unrelenting identification with his part, would Karşılaşma
have been nearly as successful? We should also give credit to Ali Uğur's
cinematography and Tamer Çıray's music.
