CONTEMPORARY TURKISH CINEMA Çamur / Mud 2003, 98 minutes, 35 mm, color; Wednesday, October 6, 8:00 PM Written and directed by Derviş
Zaim |
Four forty-something friends are haunted by the violent past of a divided
Cyprus. Temel desperately wants to speak about the vengeful crimes he
committed as a teenager; in particular, he wants to confess about the
bodies buried in the mud of a dried-up salt lake, but fear prevents him
from even visiting the location. Halil, who would rather keep the past
buried, is indifferent to Temel's anguish. Ali participates in Temel's
UN project aimed at improving the relationship between Cyprus's Greek
and Turkish communities. Having lost his voice to a mysterious illness,
he cannot speak out. Ayşe, Ali's sister, believes that science can help
her brother, despite several previous failed attempts. But Ali knows that
something more is needed; he turns instead to the rumored healing powers
of the salt lake's mud. When Ali stumbles upon the statue of an ancient
fertility god buried in the mud, Halil sees a potential opportunity to
make lots of money. However, his get-rich-quick scheme puts everyone in
danger. Derviş Zaim mixes surrealism and symbolism with reality in Çamur
(Mud) and describes it as a film about "rebirth". Festivals and Awards 2004 Sofia International Film Festival (Bulgaria)
